NORWAY
- Norway shocked Australia as they progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a penalty shootout needed to separate the two teams after a dramatic encounter.
- The Norwegians were well on their way to victory in normal time after Isabell Herlovsen put her side ahead before an 83rd-minute equaliser forced extra-time and although Norway had a numerical advantage for the final 15 minutes of extra-time, a penalty shootout was forced.
- Norway were cool and collected with their attempts and scored all four to claim a comfortable 4-1 win in the shootout and will now turn their attentions to England with an unchanged line-up likely unless the extra period against Australia has caused any fatigue.
ENGLAND
- England overcame Cameroon in a highly controversial fixture in their last 16 clash but will be looking to put all of that drama behind them as they focus on their quarter-final contest with Norway.
- The Lionesses’ 3-0 victory means they have conceded just one goal in their four matches in the competition so far with that defensive steel set to be needed once again against the Norwegians.
- Steph Houghton opened the scoring against Cameroon before further goals from Ellen White and Alex Greenwood as Phil Neville’s side continue their assault on winning the world title and he is expected to name an unchanged side here.
THE PREDICTION
Norway and England both progressed to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup after highly-charged last 16 encounters that were dramatic for very different reasons. Norway came through a shootout after a thrilling game whilst England’s win was marred by controversy. They must put that drama behind them and focus on the task in hand with Norway possessing some dangerous players, particularly up front and they will test England’s sturdy defence. This will be a very tight and entertaining game but the Lionesses can just edge it if they remain organised at the back.
