GERMANY
- Germany made light work of Nigeria in their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup last 16 clash with the Germans highlighting their qualities as they made it four games at the tournament without conceding a goal.
- Having scored six and conceded none during the group stages, Germany continued their good form with the 3-0 win over Nigeria thanks to goals from Alexandra Popp, Sara Dabritz from the penalty spot and Lea Schuller.
- The Germans now face a clash with Sweden and could have Dzsenifer Marozsan back after she suffered a broken toe in the game against China and failed to appear against the Nigerians in the last 16.
SWEDEN
- Sweden did enough to see off Canada and progress to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup where they will come up against their old foes Germany as they bid to rid themselves of an unwanted record.
- Germany have dominated games against Sweden stretching back 28 years and the Swedes will have to improve on their effort in their last 16 game if they are to cause the Germans enough problems to win.
- Stina Blackstenius’ goal in the second half was enough to separate the two teams and seal Sweden’s spot in the last eight where they will be able to field the same line-up with no injuries to worry about.
THE PREDICTION
Sweden have not beaten Germany in a major tournament since 1991 and the Germans will be confident of keeping that record intact. They have been solid throughout this tournament and their goal has yet to be breached thanks to some brilliant organisation and shape at the back. They may even be able to keep yet another clean sheet against Sweden which will see them progress to the final four with a great chance of lifting the trophy.
