THE TEAM NEWS
FRANCE
- Hosts France came through a brilliant contest with Brazil in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as they advanced to the quarter-finals to meet pre-tournament favourites and current champions United States.
- France went ahead in the 52nd minute thanks to a strike from Valerie Gauvin but Brazil levelled and forced the game into extra-time which saw French captain Amandine Henry separate the two teams with her effort early into the second half to put her side through.
- The same starting XI is expected to line-up for France in this quarter-final clash although the extra-time period may force a couple of changes if there are some tired legs as we get into the latter stages of the tournament.
USA
- The United States needed a penalty in the final 15 minutes of their last 16 clash with Spain to progress to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup in what was their most difficult contest of the tournament.
- After advancing to the last 16 without conceding a goal, it took Spain just nine minutes to become the first team to score against the USA which cancelled out Megan Rapinoe’s penalty two minutes before.
- Rapinoe was able to keep her nerve again as she converted her second penalty of the game with 14 minutes left on the clock to ensure the world’s number one ranked side made it into the last eight but there could be a couple of changes after the below-par display against Spain.
THE PREDICTION
France meet the USA in what is a mouth-watering prospect as the Women’s World Cup begins to heat up with two of the world’s top four teams clashing here. World number one and reigning holders USA meet the team ranked in fourth in what should be a thrilling contest. France have been involved in plenty of games with drama, mainly thanks to the input of VAR but this game should create its own headlines. Home soil should provide the French with a boost but the USA should be able to edge this although it will not be a surprise to see this game go into extra-time or even be decided by a penalty shootout.
