THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
- England made it through to the knockout stages as Group D winners, having won all three of their opening matches at the Women's World Cup for the first time.
- They rounded off the group stage with a 2-0 win against Japan on Wednesday courtesy of two goals from the recalled Ellen White.
- Against Japan, coach Phil Neville made eight changes to the team that had beaten Argentina in their previous match with the likes of Jodie Taylor, Beth Mead, Nikita Parris and Fran Kirby all dropping down to the bench as Neville opted to shuffle his team around to give some players a break and others game-time.
CAMEROON
- Cameroon dramatically made it through to the knockout rounds with an injury-time winner against New Zealand to go through as one of the four best third-placed teams.
- Against New Zealand they had taken the lead in the 57th minute through a well-taken goal by Ajara Nchout but were pegged back with ten minutes to go after an own goal from Awona and were heading out of the tournament until Nchout’s superb second goal in the 95th minute.
- This is their second consecutive appearance in the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup; in 2015 they were defeated 1-0 by China at this stage of the tournament.
THE PREDICTION
England finished at the top of their group with ease, winning all three of their matches whilst conceding only one goal and they have been rewarded with a very favourable round of 16 match against a Cameroon team that only made it through to this stage of the tournament courtesy of a winning goal in added time against New Zealand, having lost their other two group matches against Canada and the Netherlands. Cameroon have showed a lot of spirit in their matches but they lack the quality to overcome the more accomplished sides in the tournament. They are unlikely to have much success against the English defence and will struggle to contain their creative players at the other end of the pitch. England should progress without too many dramas.
