FERNANDO VERDASCO
- Fernando Verdasco dropped the first set to Australia’s John Millman in his first match at Eastbourne before rallying to win the remaining sets 6-4 and 6-1.
- The 35-year-old had a fairly decent clay-court season on what is probably his best surface but he has shown little form at all on grass in recent years, losing out at the earliest opportunity in his previous three Wimbledons.
- This is the Spaniard’s second appearance at Eastbourne, although he has played in the sister tournament in Nottingham twice also, and this is his first meeting with Juan Ignacio Londero.
JUAN IGNACIO LONDERO
- Juan Ignacio Londero is in the midst of his breakthrough year having won an ATP title in his native Argentina earlier this year before playing out a successful clay-court season which culminated in a round of 16 loss to Rafael Nadal.
- The 25-year-old has next-to-nothing in terms of grass court experience which explains his decision to partner Cameron Norrie in the doubles draw at his first Eastbourne attendance.
- Londero is a relative unknown still for many players on the tour but beat serious competition in Nikoloz Basilashvili and Richard Gasquet at Roland-Garros earlier this month.
THE PREDICTION
Two players here who would rather be playing on red, Fernando Verdasco and Juan Ignacio Londero may well cancel each other out here in their play styles, which could leave it all down to experience. Londero has never played at Halle, Queen’s, Nottingham or indeed Eastbourne until his first-round win over Britain’s Jay Clarke, and he has failed to qualify for Wimbledon twice before. He will play at the Grand Slam this year of course following his rise up the rankings, but he is unlikely to get past 35-year-old Fernando Verdasco who has been around the block a few times on grass.
