THE TEAM NEWS
PERU
- Peru came from behind to win 3-1 against Bolivia in their second Group A game in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. They are second in the table with four points and only behind Brazil on goal difference.
- After drawing a blank in their opening game against Venezuela, they looked set for more frustration against Bolivia when they went 1-0 down in the first half but their reliable talisman Paolo Guerrero played a major role in turning things around with a goal on the stroke of half-time before laying on an assist early in the second half as Peru took control and dominated the game thereafter.
- Peru have put themselves in with a good chance of earning qualification but they still need a point to make sure their fate is in their own hands.
BRAZIL
- Tournament hosts Brazil had three goals ruled out and missed a series of chances as they were held 0-0 by Venezuela in their second group match. Brazil still lead the group though on four points ahead of Peru on goal difference and the sides meet knowing that they need only a draw to seal their place in the quarter-finals.
- The homes fans booed the team at half-time when they were level against Bolivia in their opening game and a chorus of boos again rang out at the final whistle against Venezuela. A slow start against Peru would lead to more discontent.
- Although Brazil only need a draw to guarantee qualification, there is plenty of expectation on them to win following the disappointment of their goalless game against Venezuela.
THE PREDICTION
Brazil and Peru meet in the final match in their group for the second Copa America in succession and there may be a little extra edge to the encounter after what happened on the previous occasion in 2016, when a 1-0 win for Peru through a controversial goal which should have been disallowed for handball saw Brazil eliminated from the tournament. Both teams have had similar campaigns in the 2019 Copa America with frustrating 0-0 draws against Venezuela and strong second half showings giving them victories against Bolivia. This is a tricky fixture for the host nation with pressure from their expectant fans and it is vital for Brazil to start well. If they do go ahead, they are capable of claiming victory but it will be far from easy.
