THE TEAM NEWS

COLOMBIA

  • Colombia were the only team to come through the group stage with three wins from three games and they did so without conceding a goal in their victories against Argentina, Qatar and Paraguay.
  • Having already guaranteed their place in the last eight before their final group match against Paraguay, they made ten changes from the side that beat Qatar in their previous game.
  • The likes of James Rodríguez, Yerry Mina and Davinson Sánchez were all rested in their final group game and will come back in fresh for this match. In attack, Duván Zapata has scored twice in the tournament and might get the nod over Radamel Falcao who has yet to find the net.

CHILE

  • Chile qualified for the quarter-finals in second place behind Uruguay in Group C; they lost 1-0 to Uruguay in their final group match having already secured a place in the knockout phase with victories against Japan and Ecuador.
  • They only needed a draw against Uruguay to seal top spot in the group and looked as though they were heading for that outcome only for a goal inside the last ten minutes from Edinson Cavani which settled the encounter.
  • Reinaldo Rueda opted to change their formation against Uruguay to 3-5-2 having left out full backs Isla and Beausejour who were on yellow cards. The formation will change back to 4-3-3 for this game as they come back in along with the inspirational Arturo Vidal who also didn’t play against Uruguay.

THE PREDICTION

Chile have won the previous two editions of the Copa America but if they are to stay on course to make it a hat-trick they will have to overcome a Colombian team who are in good form with three wins from three in the group stage. Both teams have been solid in defence during the tournament whilst key attacking players such as James Rodriguez for Colombia and Alexis Sanchez for Chile have produced some eye-catching displays. In a tightly contested game, Colombia are predicted to just have the edge. With the high energy approach favoured by Chile not as effective as in years gone by due to their ageing team, Colombia may take advantage of tired legs during the second half.
