THE TEAM NEWS

BRAZIL

  • Brazil were once again unimpressive as they put in another underwhelming performance at the 2019 Copa America, much to the frustration of the home crowd as they just edged past Paraguay.
  • The samba flair was lacking as the hosts played out a goalless draw, despite playing against ten men for over 30 minutes of the second half after Paraguay had a man sent off but Brazil could not capitalise.
  • Brazil may opt to make changes in the attacking positions for this semi-final clash with Richarlison set to be available for selection after missing out with mumps but they could also be forced into changes in deeper areas too with Fernandinho struggling to prove his fitness whilst Filipe Luis is also a doubt after coming off at half-time against Paraguay.

ARGENTINA

  • Argentina were much-improved from their efforts in the group stage as they produced their best display of the tournament to defeat Venezuela in their quarter-final clash at the Copa America.
  • They were helped by a pressure-relieving goal early on as Lautaro Martinez was on hand to turn in strike-partner Sergio Aguero’s effort before the Manchester City man had a shot spilled by the ‘keeper with just over 15 minutes to go which allowed Giovani Lo Celso to seal the win.
  • The Argentines dominated for most of the game and did a good job at restricting Venezuela in front of goal despite them seeing more of the ball and after such a solid performance, Argentina may keep faith with the same starting XI.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a mouth-watering prospect but there are lingering doubts over how good this game will actually be compared to years gone by. Brazil are struggling to impress the home crowd with some lacklustre attacking efforts whilst Argentina lack the cohesion of a quality side with too much emphasis placed on Lionel Messi. Perhaps playing one another will bring the best out of both teams and turn this into a must-watch spectacle but it is a difficult one to call. Brazil will be favourites on home soil but they must improve in attack to capitalise on Argentina’s weaknesses at the back whilst the stage is set for Messi to guide his side to the final but his team will need to play very well to win.
