THE TEAM NEWS

USA

  • The United States overcame a dogged Panama side in their final group game of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup to ensure they advanced to the knockout stages as the winners of Group D.
  • Jozy Altidore’s strike was enough to separate the two teams and give the USA their third successive win of the tournament as they continue to shape as one of the main threats to lift the crown.
  • The United States were able to win the game despite changing their entire starting XI as they looked to give some of their fringe players game time but the vast majority, if not all of that side, will drop out to make way for the side that defeated Trinidad and Tobago.

CURACAO

  • Curacao qualified for the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup thanks to claiming a draw against Jamaica in their final game of Group C but needed help from Honduras as they defeated El Salvador to ensure they progressed.
  • A point for El Salvador would have knocked Curacao out but they were able to advance thanks to goal difference with Jurien Gaari’s goal deep into stoppage time proving to be vital for his side.
  • Nobody expected Curacao to make it this far which makes it an achievement in itself and whilst they are huge underdogs to defeat the USA, their players will look to enjoy themselves as a celebration of what they have accomplished in this competition so far.

THE PREDICTION

Curacao are the surprise name in the last eight of the Gold Cup after progressing from a competitive Group C but now face a mammoth task against the USA. The United States are one of the strongest teams in the tournament and should be far too good for the minnows but any complacency could be punished. Curacao have been plucky at times and ridden their luck defensively but if that evades them, they could be on the end of a big defeat here.
