THE TEAM NEWS
MEXICO
- Mexico ran into a valiant Haiti side in their 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final and the surprise package of the tournament did not go down without a fight as they forced extra-time.
- After a goalless 90 minutes with neither creating much in terms of quality chances, Mexico opened the scoring just three minutes into extra-time thanks to Raul Jimenez’s penalty and that proved to be the difference between the two teams.
- Mexico found it difficult to break down Haiti and will need to show great improvement in the final against the USA with all three central midfielders coming off against Haiti, which is where changes are likely to be made if they choose to do so.
USA
- USA sealed a dramatic victory over Jamaica to progress to the final of the Gold Cup with the Americans showing great focus to seal the win after the semi-final was stopped for 90 minutes because of lightning.
- Weston McKennie put his side ahead after just eight minutes and the score remained 1-0 heading into the break before Christian Pulisic scored his side’s second but Jamaica managed to pull one back to make it a nervy finish until Pulisic’s second sealed the 3-1 victory.
- The manner in which they won and the stoppages they had to endure will have made it a mentally draining affair for the United States and they will need to quickly overcome that ahead of the final with Mexico in a team that could feature a couple of changes with Jozy Altidore potentially set to drop to the bench.
THE PREDICTION
Both Mexico and the USA avoided upsets in their semi-final contests as they ensured they met in a Gold Cup final for the first time since 2011. These two teams have won every tournament dating back to 2002 with Canada the last team that wasn’t the USA or Mexico to win it in 2000. They are the best two teams in the competition and were the pre-tournament favourites which should make this a thrilling contest. Mexico will enter as favourites but it’s the USA that can win this one and defend their crown.
