THE TEAM NEWS
MEXICO
- Mexico made hard work of their final group game of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup as they narrowly defeated Martinique to ensure they progressed to the quarter-finals as Group A winners.
- Fielding a much-changed line-up apart from their front three, the Mexicans did not have things their own way but goals from Carlos Antuna, Raul Jimenez and Fernando Navarro were enough for a 3-2 victory.
- Few of those brought in during the win over Martinique did little to impress and potentially force their way into the starting line-up for this game with Mexico expected to revert to a similar side that faced Canada.
COSTA RICA
- Costa Rica suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Haiti and that result could have huge ramifications for them as they now face Mexico in the quarter-finals after finishing second in Group B.
- Despite taking an early lead, the Costa Ricans were unable to hang on as Haiti hit back and a late goal sealed the win for the Haitians which meant they leapfrogged them at the top of the group.
- Whilst a game against Canada would also have proven to be a tough contest, Costa Rica would have preferred to play them over the Mexicans, especially on the back of the disappointing loss that could see them make several changes to their side.
THE PREDICTION
Mexico had the luxury of rotating their side for their final group game of the Gold Cup and were still able to claim their third win in a row against Martinique. They now face the side that finished second in Group B after Costa Rica suffered a shock loss at the hands of Haiti. They were not good enough and must drastically improve if they are to threaten Mexico but it is unlikely that they will have the quality to defeat the Mexicans who look like they are destined to make the semi-finals.
