THE TEAM NEWS
MARTINIQUE
- Martinique have given themselves an outside chance of reaching the knockout phase as they eased to a 3-0 win over Cuba last time out but they will need to produce a special performance against Mexico here.
- They will take heart from the clean sheet against Cuba but will know that Mexico represent a major step up in quality and they will revert to keeping things tight and organised for as long as they possibly can.
- They have no suspensions or new injury worries coming into this game but boss Mario Bocaly may consider one or two changes and may field a more defensive line-up after a 4-2-3-1 against Cuba.
MEXICO
- Mexico have cruised to the top of the table after two group games as they have scored 10 goals and conceded just one as they have comfortably beaten both Cuba and Canada by 7-0 and 3-1 scorelines respectively.
- Head coach Gerardo Martino made a couple of rotations between the first and second matches and he will be tempted to make a couple more although he will be keen for his team to retain the momentum they have created so far.
- The winner of the group will face either Costa Rica or most likely Haiti in the next round, so Mexico will be keen to seal top spot and set a marker down as they go into the knockout rounds.
THE PREDICTION
Mexico have arguably been the standout team in the first couple of rounds of Gold Cup matches having won both by a combined 10-1 scoreline. Head coach Gerardo Martino will demand that his side maintain the same intensity from the first two matches in this game – a trait which was notorious from his time at Barcelona where he demanded it every single game – and that will see him field a strong side here. Martinique were able to beat a poor Cuban side last time out but will find it hard to contain this powerful Mexican teams who should win this comfortably.
