THE TEAM NEWS
HAITI
- Haiti continue to produce huge shocks as their dream 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign saw them reach the semi-final stage after coming from two goals down to defeat Canada in the quarter-finals.
- The Haitians found themselves two down at the break but with a tournament exit staring them in the face, Duckens Nazon brought his side back into contention before an own goal levelled the game with 20 minutes left and their comeback was completed by Wilde-Donald Guerrier with 14 minutes remaining.
- The brilliant victory ensured Haiti maintained their 100% record at the tournament but now face pre-tournament favourites Mexico in another massive game as they attempt to complete the unthinkable with their team set to be unchanged.
MEXICO
- Mexico needed a penalty-shootout to progress to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup as they managed to overcome Costa Rica after they were held to a 1-1 draw in normal time and a goalless extra time.
- Raul Jimenez had put his side ahead just before half-time but the Costa Ricans levelled seven minutes into the second half which was the end of the scoring until the shootout with Mexico managing to overcome Jimenez’s miss with the opening kick as they eventually sealed the 5-4 win.
- Mexico were far from their best against Costa Rica and may be forced to make changes in midfield with Jonathan dos Santos struggling with a muscular injury whilst Andres Guardado is still a doubt after missing the quarter-final.
THE PREDICTION
Haiti have already exceeded all expectations in the Gold Cup but they do not want their journey to end just yet with them seeking yet another scalp. They face Mexico in this semi-final clash that nobody would have foreseen before the tournament began. The Mexicans were the pre-tournament favourites but have not been hugely impressive so far and whilst they should have enough quality to win here, the Haitians can keep their dream alive if Mexico get complacent.
