THE PLAYERS

DARYL GURNEY

  • Daryl Gurney has competed at the World Matchplay on three previous occasions and came close to making the final in 2017 when he was edged out 17-15 by Peter Wright in the last four.
  • The Northern Irishman recently achieved a career high PDC ranking of number three and will have gained great confidence from his 2019 Premier League campaign where he qualified for the play-offs.
  • He is a proven PDC major tournament winner having won the 2017 World Grand Prix and 2018 Players Championship Finals.

RICKY EVANS

  • Ricky Evans has climbed steadily up the rankings over the last year and has qualified for the World Matchplay for the first time.
  • Evans has reached two ranking tournament finals in 2019 so far, the most notable of which was on the Euro Tour at the German Darts Championship in March. That was his second appearance in a Euro Tour final in under a year as he also made it through to the final at the Dutch Darts Masters last September.
  • He has yet to make a big impact in a TV tournament with his last-16 appearances at the 2018 European Championship and 2018 Players Championship Finals being his best showings.

THE PREDICTION

Daryl Gurney has established himself as one of the top performers in the PDC and his displays in reaching the semi-finals of the Premier League backed this up. Evans is a player on the rise and he has beaten Gurney on TV before but this is a longer format and the Northern Irishman can use his extra experience to good effect which should ensure his progression into round two.
