THE PLAYERS

DARREN WEBSTER

  • Darren Webster reached the quarter-finals in each of the last two years at the World Matchplay whilst notably claiming the scalps of James Wade and Rob Cross on the stage at Winter Gardens.
  • The Demolition Man has struggled for form in 2019 with plenty of first-round exits and he comes to Blackpool having lost nine of his last ten matches on the PDC tour.
  • Webster’s place in the top 16 is under threat and having to defend his money from his quarter-final appearance at the 2017 Matchplay means extra pressure is on his shoulders at this tournament.

KRZYSZTOF RATAJSKI

  • Krzysztof Ratajski is making his World Matchplay debut and is closing in on a place in the top 32 in the PDC rankings having made a big impact on the circuit over the last couple of years.
  • Ratajski has picked up PDC ranking tournament wins in 2018 and 2019 including back-to-back wins over the same weekend in October 2018 when he didn’t even have a tour card.
  • He notably won the prestigious World Masters title in 2017 on the BDO circuit, disposing of Glen Durrant in the quarter-finals and then defeating Mark McGeeney in the final.

THE PREDICTION

The impressively consistent Polish star Ratajski poses a big threat to the number 15 seed Darren Webster who would have hoped for a more favourable draw following a tough season so far. Webster has enjoyed a good run at the Matchplay in each of the last two years but his chances of a repeat seem unlikely as he is drawn in round one against one of the most dangerous non-seeded players. The Polish Eagle has plenty of confidence and won’t be phased on his Matchplay debut and he is capable of ousting the Demolition Man in round one.
