SENEGAL
- Senegal had an easy qualifying group on paper containing Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan and it proved to be that way as they qualified for the finals with ease by taking 16 from a possible 18 points – which was more than any other team during the qualifying campaign.
- Since losing to Colombia at the 2018 World Cup finals, they are unbeaten in their last seven matches and they have won each of the last six whilst keeping a clean sheet in five of those matches.
- Senegal are well equipped with quality operators such as key forward Sadio Mane who will undoubtedly be their danger man and the defence including Kalidou Koulibaly is a formidable unit.
TANZANIA
- Tanzania are back at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since their only previous appearance in 1980 when they exited the tournament without winning a game and they may suffer the same fate on this occasion.
- They earned their place at the finals after finishing second behind Uganda in their qualifying group with a 3-0 victory against the already qualified Ugandans in their final match sealing their spot in Egypt.
- Much of Tanzania’s hopes of making an impression at the tournament rest on the shoulders of their star striker Mbwana Samatta who scored over 20 goals for Genk last season.
THE PREDICTION
Senegal look well equipped to challenge for Africa Cup of Nations glory this year and they should not be troubled too much in this opening fixture against one of the tournaments biggest outsiders. Tanzania won’t lack effort and enthusiasm but the extra quality that Senegal possess should shine through, resulting in a comfortable victory for The Teranga Lions.
