- Brisbane Heat opened their Women’s Big Bash League campaign with a 36-run defeat at the hands of the Adelaide Strikers, as they were unable to stop New Zealand international Sophie Devine on her way to 89.
- It was not all negative for the Heat though as opener Beth Mooney - the WBBL’s all-time leading run-scorer - and skipper Kirby Short put together a 127-run partnership and South Africa spinner Sune Luus showed promise with the ball so they will look to build on that.
- Australia ‘A’ and Under-19 wicket-keeper Josie Dooley returns to the Heat squad to face the Scorchers - replacing 15-year-old Charli Knott - after recovering from a broken finger in what is the only change.

- After opening their Women’s Big Bash campaign with a win, Perth Scorchers suffered their first defeat of the season in their second game as they lost by six-wickets to reigning-champions Sydney Sixers on Friday.
- In a rematch of last year’s grand final, England international Amy Jones scored 57 while Nicole Bolton added 40, but it was not enough as the Scorchers’ bowlers could not stop the Sixers reaching their total of 167 with eight balls remaining.
- The Scorchers are half-way through a double-header after their loss to the Sixers, with England’s Jones making her debut in the Sixers game after missing the first game due to injury, while Bhavi Devchand was called up as an injury replacement for youngster Piepa Cleary.
THE PREDICTION
In this year’s Womens Big Bash, the Perth Scorchers will be looking to go one step further than the previous two seasons, having lost to the Sixers in the grand final on both occasions. As for the Heat, the return of Josie Dooley should give them some further batting firepower. Last season, the Scorchers set the fourth-highest total of 188 in the WBBL against the Heat, and with the batting talent they have at their disposal, they have to be marginally favoured once again.
