Sam Patterson: English submission ace riding high
Sam Patterson (13-2-1) enters this bout on a three-fight winning streak, with all victories coming inside the first round. Most recently, he knocked out the previously undefeated Danny Barlow, following submission wins over Kiefer Crosbie (arm-triangle choke) and Yohan Lainesse (rear-naked choke). Prior to that run, Patterson was stopped by Yanal Ashmouz in a first-round knockout.
At 6’3” with a 78-inch reach, Patterson is unusually rangy for the welterweight division. A submission specialist with slick BJJ, he prefers to take fights to the mat and hunt for finishes. That said, he’s shown improved striking and legitimate knockout power, though his chin remains a concern and his defensive movement can be shaky.
Trey Waters: Towering American striker returns after lay-off
Trey Waters (9-1) is also on a three-fight winning streak, including two solid UFC victories. He impressed in his debut with a unanimous decision win over Josh Quinlan and followed up with a gritty performance against Billy Ray Goff in an epic ‘fight of the night’. The former LFA champion has not competed since May 2024 and may show small signs of ring rust.
Standing at 6’5” with a 77-inch reach, Waters is one of the tallest welterweights on the roster. He’s a rangy striker who prefers to keep the fight standing and pick opponents apart from distance. While his takedown defence has looked decent so far, he hasn’t yet been tested extensively on the ground at UFC level.
Sam Patterson vs Trey Waters prediction
This is a close match-up between two tall, rangy welterweights with different strengths. While Waters is a clean striker with good composure, Patterson has been more active and has a broader finishing arsenal — especially with his submissions.
Waters has shown promise, but Patterson’s ability to end fights early and his form against tougher opposition tip the scales in his favour for this bout. If it hits the mat, Patterson has a clear advantage, and with Waters’ only loss coming via submission, history could repeat itself.
Prediction: Sam Patterson to win
