Oumar Sy: The hometown favorite aims to make a statement following his first professional defeat

Oumar Sy (11-1) entered the UFC with a considerable amount of hype, courtesy of his imposing frame and a shiny 8-0 record at the time. The Frenchman had exhibited what appeared to be an extremely well-rounded game in his career prior to joining the UFC ranks, showcasing powerful striking and excellent wrestling. However, he's been less than inspiring throughout his organizational tenure to date. While Sy scored wins over Tuco Tokkos and Da Woon Jung in his first two appearances, he went on to produce a calamitous performance last time out, dropping a decision to the notoriously one-dimensional Alonzo Menifield in June for his first professional loss.

Brendson Ribeiro: "The Gorilla" returns with a point to prove after a harrowing loss in June

Otherwise known as "The Gorilla," Brazilian bruiser Brendson Ribeiro (17-8, 1 NC) has experienced an interesting UFC strength of schedule to date. The UFC have provided him with some absolute layups in the vein of Caio Machado, only to throw him to the proverbial wolves by feeding him to Zhang Mingyang and Azamat Murzakhanov along the way. With just a sole decision win in his seventeen professional victories, Ribeiro is a kill or be killed brand of fighter on paper. As such, it's somewhat baffling that he often doesn't come across as particularly aggressive, preferring his opponents to come to him rather than charging into the fire himself.

Oumar Sy vs Brendson Ribeiro prediction

Any fans hoping for a bloody war are likely to be disappointed in this one. Both fighters are extremely reactive counter strikers, meaning that large portions of this contest are likely to revolve around the two light heavyweights feinting and slapping leg kicks at range.

Sy entered the UFC as an extremely hyped prospect, but there's no getting away from it; he looked awful against Alonzo Menifield last time out, while his dull decision victory over Da Woon Jung immediately prior was nothing to write home about. The Frenchman really struggles when he is unable to get his wrestling going, while he can often look tentative and ponderous in the striking exchanges.

However, barring another disastrous performance, he's still likely good enough to beat a fighter of "The Gorilla's" quality. Sy may not be the prospect that many thought he might be, but Ribeiro's sole UFC wins over the likes of Caio Machado and Diyar Nurgozhay are not enough to convince me that he has what it takes to best the Frenchman. He also got completely destroyed in his last appearance and hasn't had much time to recover from a fight where he lost by KO, absorbing an ungodly amount of damage from the notoriously heavy handed Azamat Murzakhanov.

In short, Sy takes an uninspiring decision to rebound from his first professional defeat.

Prediction: Oumar Sy to win by decision
