World number 68 Yue Yuan takes on number 69 Yafan Wang for a place in the semi-finals of the Austin Open in what looks set to be a tight encounter on paper. The two compatriots both enjoyed steady rises back up the rankings last season thanks to strong work on the ITF circuit but 29-year-old Wang has enjoyed the best of 2024 so far, upsetting Sorana Cirstea and Emma Raducanu at the Australian Open before a third round exit in three tight sets to eventual runner-up Qinwen Zheng. 25-year-old Yuan beat Taylor Townsend in impressive straight set son Wednesday to look ready for the battle here but Wang’s relentless ball-striking looks the more potent game in these conditions. Wang ha set to drop a set this week but back her to win outright here for caution’s sake.
