Aston Villa preview: A win on the board

After going winless in their opening four matches of the Premier League season and losing the UEFA Super Cup to Paris Saint-Germain in August, the new look Aston Villa have now managed three key victories on the road.

Having beaten Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League and then Coventry City in the EFL Cup, The Villans then went and won 3-2 against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, being 3-0 up until very late on in that game in North London.

Brentford preview: Unbeaten Bees

Brentford went into the international break on the back of extending their unbeaten start to the season to seven matches across all competitions by hammering Chelsea by three goals to nil in a West London Derby at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Keith Andrews performed well in his debut managerial campaign last year as Brentford narrowly missed out on European qualification last season and there is an expectation that The Bees may well kick on again and into those spots this time around.

Aston Villa team news: Torres could return

Pau Torres was forced off against injury for Aston Villa against Nottingham Forest last month but the prolonged international break may well have helped the Spain international centre-back to return quite quickly.

The same cannot be said for Ian Maatsen, who remains sidelined, while Leon Goretzka is working his way back to full fitness after the break.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Ruggeri; Kamara, Gomes; McGinn, Buendia, Manzambi; Jackson

Unavailable: Maatsen (Injured), Onana (Injured)

Questionable: Bizot (Injured), Torres (Injured), Goretzka (Fitness), Alysson (Injured), Madjo (Injured)

Brentford team news: A few could return

As they travel north to face Aston Villa, Brentford could have a few key men returning to fitness for this one such as Nathan Collins, Sepp van den Berg and Mathias Jensen.

Keith Andrews has a deep squad in attack and Jaidon Anthony, who scored against Chelsea, may well keep his spot alongside the likes of Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Kayode, Schuster, Ajer, Lewis-Potter; Yarmolyuk, Janelt; Anthony, Damsgaard, Schade; Thiago

Unavailable: Furo (Injured)

Questionable: Collins (Injured), Van den Berg (Injured), Jensen (Injured), Dasilva (Injured), Milambo (Injured), Ouattara (Illness)

Key stats

  • Villa have won four of 10 Premier League meetings with Brentford (D3 L3).
  • Brentford won both meetings last season 1-0, and Villa failed to score in either. The win at Villa Park in February 2026 was Brentford's first Premier League victory there.
  • Before those two defeats, Villa had gone six Premier League games unbeaten against Brentford (W4 D2) between October 2022 and March 2025.
  • The highest-scoring meeting was a 3-3 draw at Villa Park in April 2024. The biggest win is Villa's 4-0 at home in October 2022.
  • Villa have lost both home league games this season (0-1 v Arsenal, 1-2 v Forest). Last season they won 12 of 19 at home on the way to fourth place.
  • Villa have conceded in each of their last five home Premier League games; their last home clean sheet was on 22 March 2026 (2-0 v West Ham).
  • Villa have scored only four goals in five games and have failed to score in three of them.
  • Brentford are unbeaten in seven Premier League games (W2 D5) and have scored in every one of them, a run that began on 17 May 2026.
  • Brentford's 9 points is their best start to a Premier League season after five games (previous best: 8 in 2021/22).
  • Brentford are winless in seven Premier League away games (D5 L2) and have drawn their last three. Their last away win was 4-3 at Burnley on 28 February 2026, and they have not kept an away clean sheet since 21 March.
  • Both of Brentford's clean sheets this season came at home: 3-0 against both Tottenham and Chelsea.
  • On this day in 2022 (10 October), Villa drew 1-1 at Forest.

Aston Villa vs Brentford prediction

Unai Emery has endured tough starts to seasons before and the sheer volume of comings and goings over the summer was always expected to bring about teething issues this season once again. They did begin to discover a formula before the break, though, and Brentford may well feel the brunt of that – but the visitors have a varied and very effective way of playing and so both teams scoring seems a decent bet for this one in the second city.

Aston Villa vs Brentford tip: Both teams to score
