Xinyu Gao progressed to the next round of the China Open after a straight sets win over Panna Udvardy. Gao converted four of her five break point opportunities on her way to a 6-2 6-3 victory after one hour and 23 minutes. That was her first tour-level win of the campaign, and she now takes on six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.

The 25-year-old looked on course for the US Open quarter-finals as she opened up a 5-0 lead against Qinwen Zheng in her round-of-16 match. However, Swiatek relinquished control, losing seven games in a row to go behind. She never recovered after that, losing 7-5 6-3 and ensuring her first season without a Grand Slam title since 2021. That defeat will have stung, as she shone during the earlier part of the North American swing, with a first title of the year in Toronto and a strong run to the semi-finals in Cincinnati. She is now down to nine in the world rankings, her lowest place since February 2022.

Despite her troubles, Swiatek should navigate through this opening match with ease.
