World number eight Jessica Pegula is yet to drop a set after two impressive victories over Viktorija Golubic and in-form Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The 28-year-old should be considered a genuine dark horse for the title this fortnight after reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for a second-successive year back in January and then emulating that at Roland-Garros, where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Swiatek has ended two of her more promising runs this season and the American is once again on a collision course with the world number one but she should have more than enough to reach the round of 16 in New York for a first time against impressive qualifier Yue Yuan, who stunned Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets on Thursday. The 23-year-old will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 106th no matter the outcome here but Pegula’s level is peaking this season and she can be backed to come through in straight sets.
