21-year-old Rinky Hijikata received a wildcard to make his debut at the Australian Open as a young home hopeful and he impressed on his full Grand Slam debut at the US Open last August, taking the first set from Rafael Nadal before losing in three. The world number 169 played a lot of tennis on the ITF and Challenger circuits last season and he looks set to target a jump into main ATP tour tennis for at least some of this season. World number 128 Yannick Hanfmann qualified well this week to make the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time since Melbourne last season, where he stunned Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets after the Aussie came in with some hype. Hanfmann’s experience could be the telling factor in this first meeting between the two but Court 8 should attract a fair crowd halfway through Day 1 and that should give Hijikata the advantage. Leave this match out of an accumulator but consider backing the Aussie to edge this outright.
