THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Clara Burel set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 44th after a strong start to 2024, reaching the third round of the Australian Open before the quarter-finals at the Linz 500, but her last win on tour came over a month ago. The Frenchwoman has the potential to break inside the top 40 this season but this looks a tough task against in-form Xiyu Wang, who beat Danielle Collins and Anhelina Kalinina last week in Austin before just missing out on the title. Wang, also 22, will break back inside the top 50 with victory here but her run to the Guangzhou Open title last September is proof that she is capable of more. Both youngsters have enjoyed string starts to the season but Wang’s recent efforts in similar conditions in Austin make her the slight favourite here, back the Chinese to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
