World number 160 Heather Watson grabbed one of the shocks of the Hua Hin tournament so far by ousting second-seed Yulia Putintseva from a set down on Tuesday and she overcame Na-lae Han in three sets on Thursday to back it up well. The 30-year-old was in great form just before the covid-19 pandemic, winning one of the last-held tournaments of 2020 at the Acapulco Open, but after some tough seasons she enjoyed one of the best runs of her career at Wimbledon last summer – exiting to Jule Niemeier in the round of 16. World number 81 Xinyu Wang is yet to drop a set this week but facing Heather Watson with some wins behind her will be tougher than her first two opponents in Hua Hin. The 21-year-old is probably the slight favourite here but given Watson’s battling performances so far tale the Chinese to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
