Former world number one Karolina Pliskova brought poor form into the Australian Open but she is no stranger to peaks and troughs on tour, with her last burst of strong form a run to the quarter-finals at the US Open. The 30-year-old handed Yulia Putintseva a first-set bagel in a straight-sets win on Thursday and she looks the dependable favourite in this first meeting with world number 97 Varvara Gracheva. 22-year-old Gracheva has conceded just six games so far in Melbourne and that includes a stunning upset over eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the first round. The Russian has never reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam but she looks at home in big-game conditions. Pliskova’s world-class serve should be the difference-maker here but Gracheva has played well enough to suggest backing the Czech to win outright is possibly too risky for an accumulator.
