World number seven Andrey Rublev and number 34 Ugo Humbert will meet for the second time in as many weeks after Humbert upset the Russian in three sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Beijing Open. 25-year-old Humbert will move back inside the top 30 for the first time since early 2022 after a blistering win over J.J. Wolf, conceding just three games on Wednesday in a hugely encouraging way to back-up his round of 16 result over Stefanos Tsitsipas. Three-set matches with Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev, who edged past the Frenchman in Beijing last week, are promising signs that Humbert has finally worked his way back from a horrid 2022 season that saw him fall so far away from his career-high of 25th and he can break that milestone with victory here.
Rublev, also 25, is suddenly the highest seed remaining in Shanghai after a round of 16 full of shocks and he looks better equipped for this rematch with the Frenchman after making the last eight without dropping a set. A straight-sets victory over Tommy Paul on Wednesday is strong form indeed but Humbert’s returning confidence should see the left-hander find the angles capable of hurting his opponent. Back Humbert to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright win on its own.
