THE PREDICTION
World number 52 Sebastian Korda came back from a set down to beat Facundo Bagnis on Monday, whilst world number 34 Tommy Paul needed five sets to oust Bernabe Zapata Miralles in matches both will have expected to clear in straight sets. 25-year-old Paul has been in some serious form this summer but a three-set defeat to Denis Shapovalov at the Cincinnati Open last time out was far from the level we saw in Montreal, where he claimed a career-best victory over Carlos Alcaraz in one of the displays of the season. 22-year-old Korda also beat Alcaraz this year, bac at the Monte-Carlo Open on clay, but performances like that have been few and far between for the former world number 30. This clash feels like a big springboard for the victor and it looks a really difficult call between Paul’s current form and Korda’s impressive record over his compatriot.
The younger American beat Paul three times last season, twice on US hardcourts, to suggest he has the edge here and it would not be a surprise to see this go to five sets. Back Paul to win at least two sets given his current trajectory and leave the winner up to chance.
