THE PREDICTION
World number 39 Jenson Brooksby provided the upset of the day on Thursday with a brilliant four-set victory over second seed Casper Ruud, who called him ‘annoyingly good’ at the net. 22-year-old Brooksby looks ready to come back into rising star territory after a choppy, often frustrating 2022 season with few highlights other than finishing runner-up in two finals in Dallas and Atlanta and another strong run at the US Open, where he upset Borna Coric in three. World number 35 Tommy Paul enjoyed his best season last year with a career-best victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the Canada Masters the stand-out result, although a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon was excellent too. Paul overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five sets on Thursday to back-up an assured first round victory and he beat Brooksby in straight sets in their only previous meeting at the Cincinnati Masters last August. Paul is the more dependable player, and deceptively good on his day, but big-game tennis seems to suit Brooksby’s occasionally flammable temperament to a tee. Back both players to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance, with five sets a distinct possibility here.
