THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Tommy Paul came back from a bagel against Richard Gasquet on Monday, ousting the home favourite 8-6 in the deciding tiebreak. The 26-year-old has laboured a little on tour since losing to Ben Shelton in the round of 16 at the US Open but three of his last four defeats have come against top 10 players, with last week’s exit in Vienna to Borna Gojo the more concerning result. World number 60 Botic van de Zandschulp is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests but he will be encouraged by a straight-sets victory over French number one Adrian Mannarino on Monday, backing-up two strong wins in qualifying. The Dutchman has failed to win back-to-back matches ever since finishing runner-up to Holger Rune at the Munich Open in April, for a second year on the spin, but there are signs he is improving in time to play his role for the Netherlands at the Davis Cup this month. Van de Zandschulp beat Paul in straight sets in the Davis Cup Group Stages in September but back Paul to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors here.
BETTING TIP: Tommy Paul to win a set.
