THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating and likely thrilling Mexican Open final between world number 22 Alex de Minaur and number 23 Tommy Paul after both players overcame higher seeds in three blistering sets apiece. 25-year-old Paul’s efforts were especially impressive after he beat world umber five Taylor Fritz in the longest match in Acapulco’s history at three and a half hours, which is saying something after Alexander Zverev and Jenson Brooksby played into the early hours here last season. Not to be outdone, 24-year-old De Minaur avenged two defeats to Holger Rune late last season with an excellent comeback on Friday. Both players dropped their first sets of the tournament in the semi-final and three seem likelier than two here in what could end up another marathon. The pair met three times last season and De Minaur won each of them to take a very convincing head-to-head record into the final but Paul is undoubtedly a better player this season after his incredible run to the semi-finals at the Australian Open. Back De Minaur to earn at least a set or consider taking the three sets option here to avoid picking an outright winner. If forced, back in-form Paul to edge this.
