THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Cam Norrie finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Argentina Open on Sunday, his second defeat in a final this season after coming unstuck against Richard Gasquet at the Auckland Open last month. The 27-year-old is an excellent all-courter these days with his most recent of four ATP titles coming on clay at last season’s Lyon Open and a total of three finals reached on the surface. World number 83 Thiago Monteiro will be a tough test as a home hopeful here in Rio, though, and the Brazilian should be boosted by an excellent three-set victory over former world number four Dominic Thiem on Monday. Norrie beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo in straight sets on Tuesday in an encouraging reaction to his loss in Buenos Aires but three sets seem likelier than two here with home advantage a huge boost for Monteiro. Back Norrie to edge through.
