THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Jannik Sinner will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of second if he can out-perform defending Indian Wells champion Carlos Alcaraz’ efforts this fortnight. The Italian has lost just one of his last 24 matches, to Novak Djokovic in the final of the ATP Finals, to pick up titles in Vienna, Rotterdam, help Italy to a historic Davis Cup title and claim his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. Perhaps most impressively, Sinner has beaten Novak Djokovic three times since meeting in the group stages of the ATP Finals in November and that currently sets him apart from every other player on tour, including Alcaraz, as the likeliest next number one. World number 99 Thanasi Kokkinakis did very well to beat in-form Marcos Giron in straight sets on Wednesday but the Aussie has quite clearly drawn the shortest straw possible here in the desert. Sinner brings a 15-match winning streak into the Sunshine Double and a confident 3-0 lead in his head-to-head with the Aussie, who will likely begin well before falling away in straight sets.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN 2-0
