THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Borna Coric gained an extra bit of rest on Tuesday when Dan Evans was forced to retire from their first round match early in the first set. The Croat pulled out of the Rotterdam Open last month with fitness concerns of his own and it remains to be seen how he fares here with this only his fifth match of the season. World number 101 Thanasi Kokkinakis took a much-needed break from the tour after that incredible six-hour slog against Andy Murray at the Australian Open, where the Aussie took the first two sets with some blistering tennis before falling foul of former world number one Murray’s un-matched determination. The 26-year-old looks to have managed the potential fallout from that defeat well, coming back a month later to win a Challenger event in Bahrain two weeks ago against a talented field, and this looks an intriguing second round clash now.
Coric leads Kokkinakis 2-0 in their head-to-head with two wins late last season in straight sets but if Kokkinakis can play like he did in Melbourne this should see three sets at least. Given Coric’s slow start to 2023, back Kokkinakis to earn his first set against the Croat and leave the victor up to chance.
