THE PREDICTION
World number nine Taylor Fritz overcame a huge assault by Marcos Giron on Saturday to maintain the defence of his Delray Beach title without yet dropping a set. The 26-year-old endured a woeful end to last season, ending it early in fact, but he looked ready to enjoy a better start to 2024 with a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month seeing a four-set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas before defeat to Novak Djokovic in four. World number 14 Tommy Paul will be Fritz’s biggest challenge yet as he rides a seven-match winning streak into the final, with victory at the Dallas Open last week his second ATP title to date. Paul, also 26, beat an out-of-sorts Frances Tiafoe in straight sets on Saturday to improve round-on-round but his most impressive win in this spell was last week’s victory over Ben Shelton in Dallas.
Paul beat Fritz in three tight sets to reach the Acapulco Open final last March, levelling their tour-level head-to-head at 2-2, but Fritz has the better experience on this court. The sensible option is taking the top seed to earn at least a set as the slight favourite but you could add at least a tiebreak for good measure, with four played in their nine tour-level sets so far, including three in their last two matches.
TIP: TAYLOR FRITZ TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
