THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Taylor Fritz came into the Delray Beach Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of seventh and he has so far delivered, reaching the semi-finals without dropping a set. A 10-8 victory in the first set tiebreak with Adrian Mannarino on Friday suggests the American is dialled in this week but he was stunned at this stage of the Dallas Open last week by eventual champion Yibing Wu to suggest there is a slight vulnerability there. 27-year-old Mackenzie McDonald is just one place away from his career-high ATP world ranking of 48th in the live table after an excellent start to 2023, with a comeback victory over Michael Mmoh on Friday taking his season record up to 9-4. A three-set victory over in-form Yoshihito Nishioka in the round of 16 is an eye-catching one, as was his career-best victory over Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open despite his opponent’s clear injury that day. McDonald was the winner in their only previous meeting, beating Fritz in three sets in the first round here in Delray Beach back in 2019. Four years on both players have improved but Fritz should be able to edge it this time around to reach the final. Three sets are a distinct possibility here.
