21-year-old Emilio Nava made full use of his wildcard to oust former Miami Open champion John Isner in straight sets late on Wednesday. The American will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 169th for his trouble but the experience of beating a veteran on tour could be the making of the rest of his season and this promises to be an entertaining clash with US number one Taylor Fritz. 25-year-old Fritz moved back to world number 10 this week after failing to defend his Indian Wells title in a three-set defeat to Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals last Thursday but he has been one of the most consistent performers on tour for much of the last few months, with runs to at least the quarter-finals in each of his last four tournaments suggesting he can avoid an upset here. Nava’s performance against Isner coupled with Fritz’ heart-breaking defeat in the desert last week makes taking the world number 10 to win outright the suitably cautious call and therefore backing Nava to earn at least a set could be a valuable one-off in a match that will likely be under the lights.
