World number seven Taylor Fritz was stunned by eventual champion Yibing Wu from a set up last week in the Dallas semi-finals and he will be eager to make amends this week in Florida. The 25-year-old is coming up to a title defence at Indian Wells next month and a winning streak, or at least some more convincing performances than in recent weeks, would be hugely beneficial. This looks a kind enough opener against 31-year-old Emilio Gomez but the Ecuadorian set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 94th this week after a run to the quarter-finals in Dallas last time out. Gomez beat qualifier Wu Ting-lin in straight sets on Monday but is last week’s upset over Miomir Kecmanovic that suggests he is dangerous here. Backing Fritz to win outright seems to be the suitably cautious move here, given his recent matches.
