THE LOWDOWN

World number three Maria Sakkari stands to lose a lot of ranking points this fortnight as she comes up to the anniversary of her run to the semi-finals of the US Open. The 27-year-old lost in the last four of two Grand Slams last season, on both occasions to the eventual champion, with defeats to Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu in New York. Sakkari reached a first Masters final at Indian Wells back in March but she has since won just 12 of 24 matches. World number 92 Tatjana Maria won plenty of new fans to her cause with an incredible run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month and she should be ranked well inside the top 40 if points were not controversially denied. The 35-year-old claimed the second WTA title of her career at the Bogota Open on clay back in April.

THE PREDICTION

This will be the third Grand Slam meeting this season between Tatjana Maria and Maria Sakkari, with the Greek winning in straight sets at the Australian Open before the German returned the favour in the third round at Wimbledon. 35-year-old mother of two Maria’s incredible run at SW19 was seriously special up to a three-set defeat to friend and eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur and after a lull she reached the quarter-finals in Granby this week with two much-needed wins. Sakkari is something of an enigma these days and she could just as easily blast through this match in two as be stunned in the first round. A hardcourt suits the Greek better, though, so backing her to win at least a set looks the suitably cautious pick here as the likelier victor. Expect Tatjana Maria to win the crowd over to aid her chances.
