27-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova overcame Lulu Sun in two tight sets on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Korea Open. The Russian can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd by reaching the final, which would be her second of the year after she won her second WTA title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch back in June. World number 80 Tatjana Maria put in a serious shift on Friday, though, to stun fourth-seed Lin Zhu for just two conceded games. The 35-year-old’s renaissance shows no signs of stopping after returning to the tour as she is yet to drop a set this week in Seoul with performances reminiscent of her incredible shock run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon in July. The pair have never met on tour before but a top-level Alexandrova should be coming through the winner. The shrewd move could be taking Maria to snatch at least a set, though, in her current form.
