World number 15 Alexander Zverev can be pleased with his return to tour from a serious injury suffered in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, with his last three exits coming at the hands of Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev for strong company. The former world number two is excellent on clay, particularly at altitude, and so he will not fear the incoming swing as much as most of his peers in the top 20. That lack of ranking points anxiety may scupper a few players this fortnight to seethe German make his deepest run yet this season but world number 97 Taro Daniel is in excellent form and a first meeting between the two sees the Japanese with a huge opportunity to face a still under-par Zverev. 30-year-old Daniel was in control against Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday before the Frenchman was forced to retire in the first set but he stunned Matteo Berrettini at this stage of Indian Wells last timeout to reach the third round before testing Cam Norrie all the way to a decider. Ultimately, Zverev should be coming through this match in straight sets despite Daniel’s form but there is enough doubt here to make taking the German to win outright the sensible call.
