THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Tallon Griekspoor is the top seed in Astana at a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th but he survived an early scare on Saturday in a three-set victory over qualifier Sho Shimabukuro. The Dutchman is enjoying the best season of his career with two ATP 250 titles claimed in Pune and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and he reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open earlier this month. World number 28 Sebastian Korda went one further at the Australian Open back in January but injury there totally scuppered his early searing form. The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Zhuhai Championships last week to look a steady challenger here and he beat Nuno Borges in straight sets on Saturday to back-up a solid opener over Alexei Popyrin.
The American could be expected to win this match pretty comfortably at their respective bests but Griekspoor is enjoying the better period on tour right now. Back the top seed to earn at least a set or take the match to see at least one tiebreak, with the pair seeing five between their matches so far in Astana.
