World number 61 Tallon Griekspoor comes into Melbourne with a 4-0 winning streak after claiming his maiden ATP title at the Pune Open last week. The 26-year-old started last season in excellent form and he set a career-high ATP world ranking of 44th in August before his level dropped, rather concerningly, in the second-half of 2022. World number 118 Pavel Kotov came back from a set down to beat Griekspoor at the Marrakech Open last Spring on clay but hardcourt conditions certainly favour the Dutchman in this rematch. 24-year-old Kotov will be a tough foe, though, after the Russian was offered a second chance to make the first round as a lucky loser after defeat in his last qualifying match to Ernesto Escobedo and there is extra uncertainty about this fixture as Griekspoor will have to deal with recalibrating from a title to win to a first round. Sets seem likely to go both ways here and this match looks a decent candidate for five sets, with Griekspoor taking Pablo Carreno Busta to five sets in a second round defeat here last year, so taking Griekspoor to earn at least two of them looks the suitably cautious pick.
