World number 131 Clara Burel qualified the hard way this week with two of her three matches seeing three sets but that could be the telling factor here against wildcard Talia Gibson. 21-year-old Burel set a career-high WTA world ranking of 74th last February and she provided one of the shocks of the US Open late last year with a victory over Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the first round proof of what she is capable. 18-year-old Gibson will be well-backed by however much of a crowd there is in this first-on match on Day 1 of the Australian Open but it is sometimes easier for a wildcard to face a player who has not come through qualifying, given the momentum three wins offers.
