THE PREDICTION
Sweden come into the Davis Cup Group Stages in Bologna heavily underpowered after former Swedish number one Mikael Ymer was recently suspended from the tour for missing doping tests. The 25-year-old abruptly retired from the sport after failing to overturn the decision, leaving a gaping hole for his brother, Elias, and world number 334 Leo Borg, son of 11 time Grand Slam champion Bjorn, to fill. 27-year-old Nicolas Jarry set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd this week after another solid run at a Grand Slam in New York and the Chilean will be desperate to impress representing his nation as the first option in the Davis Cup Group Stages for the first time. Jarry will be backed-up well by former world number 17 Cristian Garin, who led the Chilean line for many years until falling away on tour recently, for a high quality pairing that could see them end up shock Group A winners this week in Bologna.
World number 175 Elias Ymer excelled this time last season as Sweden’s second option, beating Davis Cup extraordinaire Borna Gojo of Croatia and Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in three tight sets, but he looks a serious underdog as first pick here. Nicolas Jarry should have little trouble easing past on a surface that suits his powerful frame and huge wingspan here in Bologna and Cristian Garin should have even less trouble ousting Leo Borg in straight sets. Take Chile to win the tie before the doubles pairings, at this stage totally up in the air, take to court.
