THE LOWDOWN

STORM SANDERS

27-year-old Storm Sanders won the Adelaide International doubles title alongside friend and compatriot Ash Barty last week and she produced something of a shock by taking a set off Elena Rybakina in a three-set defeat in the singles there. The world number 135 will have more stock in the Women’s and Mixed doubles at the Australian Open but a victory over Elise Mertens at the Billie Jean King Cup last season is a vastly impressive result.

ARYNA SABALENKA

World number two Aryna Sabalenka is a vastly powerful player who added two more titles last season to her total of 10, including three Masters titles, but her capitulation in the semi-finals of the US Open is a lasting memory. The 23-year-old is still young behind one of the most explosive serves in the game and if she is to win a Grand Slam it is likely to come here in Melbourne, where she won the Doubles title last season, or in New York.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka has so far served 39 double faults in her two matches in 2022 so far and if she cannot get her world-class weapon fit and firing in time for the first round here it could be a famous day for Storm Sanders in Melbourne. The home crowd will back the popular Aussie to the hilt and with Sanders enjoying some impressive results towards the end of last season it could be worth taking a one-off punt on the 27-year-old to win here. In a match that may well need a decider the safest option is for Sabalenka to win at least one but the world number two’s game is in disarray right now and any call here seems a risk. Leave it out of an accumulator but taking Sanders to snatch at least a set could actually be the shrewd move.
