Two of the best-looking backhands in the business face off here as former world number Stan Wawrinka meets former world number seven Richard Gasquet, with both men in the twilight of their illustrious careers. 37-year-old Wawrinka beat Alexander Bublik in straight sets on Monday before playing alongside the Kazakh in an impressive doubles victory over Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic on Tuesday and the Swiss has looked excellent indoors in the last few months on tour. 36-year-old Gasquet is enjoying some brilliant form in 2023, winning the 16th title of his career at the Auckland Open back in January. The Frenchman came back from a set down to stun seventh seed Pablo Carreno Busta on Monday to snap a two-match losing streak well and he beat Wawrinka in conditions like these at the European Open late last season to take a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head.
The pair have met four times and, remarkably, on four different surfaces after their first encounter took place on carpet at the 2006 Paris Masters but this second-successive hardcourt clash will ruin the trend. Wawrinka’s only win came on clay at Roland-Garros in 2013, so back in-form Gasquet to earn at least a set in a match that looks destined for a decider.
