THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Sorana Cirstea could be a serious dark horse at Roland-Garros as she continues to enjoy some renaissance form on tour. A shock exit to Clara Burel at the Strasbourg Open is a blip on an otherwise remarkable 2023 season that saw the Romanian reach the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and then the semi-finals of the Miami Open, with a series of eye-catching results over the likes of Caroline Garcia (twice), Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Muchova. World number 52 Jasmine Paolini comes in hot from a Challenger title won in Florence last Sunday but her tour-level form has been under par for much of the last 12 months. Cirstea set her best Grand Slam run here with a quarter-final exit way back in 2009 but she made the round of 16 as recently as 2021 and she has rarely arrived in Paris with better form behind her. Paolini beat Cirstea in three-sets at her peak en-route to her maiden WTA title at the 2021 Slovenia Open but back Cirstea to win this rematch in straight sets.
