World number 48 Sloane Stephens reached back-to-back quarter-finals at the Merida Open and Austin Open but her form is still worryingly erratic. The 29-year-old won the Miami Masters in 2018, six months after claiming her maiden Grand Slam title in New York, but she has claimed just one more title since at last season’s Guadalajara Open. Former world number four Sofia Kenin has a similar story after spending several years in the wilderness since winning the Australian Open in 2020 but the 24-year-old still has plenty of time to turn things around and there have been encouraging signs in 2023. Kenin beat Liudmila Samsonova in Doha and she reached the semi-finals at the Hobart International before an early exit to Victoria Azarenka in a tough opener in Melbourne. The pair put on a real show at the Canada Masters last August that saw Stephens edge through in three sets and backing her to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners seems the reasonable call here.
